China is now OPEN with it’s wealth of history, arts and culture; the adventure of an ‘exotic’ destination, a place with world renowned landmarks and an environment of intrigue. Whether it be city based meetings combined with incentives, or trips that emphasize discovery and learning, China has it all, and for a range of budgets.
When considering a destination for you next Conference, Corporate Event or Incentive, many factors come into consideration including budget, accessability, client preference and previous destinations. When considering Europe the meeting planner often compares countries, one to another from the sun-drenched coasts of Spain and Portugal to the perma-frost of Iceland. The challenge is always, which destination is a ‘best fit’.
China poses both solutions and challenges, none more so than in the initial choice of location. Why? Because China is a continent in itself. With accessible cities stretching from the East Coast and Shanghai to Kashgar in Urumuqi, China’s scope is literally as diverse as traveling from Athens to Oslo.
China’s accessibility often comes as a surprise. With most major European airlines flying daily to Beijing and Shanghai and flight times ranging from 9-11 hours, China provides a challenge, not in how to create a superb programme, but which of the myriad of choices available is the best to chose. The challenge in China is what to include!
Though Beijing, Shanghai and Xian first come to mind when the option of China is posed, take into consideration the following statistics. China consists of 33 provinces and Special Autonomous Regions, most being larger in size and population than the majority of European Countries. There are 180 recognised languages (though Mandarin is the common tongue), 56 ethnic groups, climatic variances from tropical to desert to perma-frost, the active practice of all the major recognized religions.
Beijing is of course a central focus of Chinese culture and history as well as a business and political hub, but it is by no means the city that exhausts possibilities in China. Along with Xian and Chang’an it is one of the cities that served longest as an ancient capital. But consider the other options available in Chinese Imperial History there are more than 19 cities that served as Capitals for a significant length of time, several trade routes commonly referred to as the Silk Road that can be traced from the ancient capitals through the west of China into the Middle East and central Asia and Indochina.
Xingjian (one of China’s Autonomous regions) boasts 26 ethnic minorities and as a focal point of many of the Silk Road trade routes has been and still is a melting pot of ideas, architecture, religion and cultures. South to Yunnan and the influences of the bordering Asian and Indo-Chinese nations are evident. Then there is the Pearl River Delta and Hong Kong, the wide white sandy beaches of Sanya (China’s Hawaii) and China’s other world city Shanghai. China is a kaleidoscope where it is possible to fulfill all your requirements under one sky.
So how do you face the China Challenge? Where do you go and what do you do?
